Revel in the sounds of silence on this isle in the Howe Sound near the city of Vancouver. With only 130 year-round residents, Gambier is amoung British Columbia's most densely wooded, least populated islands. "It's unplugged, " says Rick Gustavson ,a local real estate agent, "but it's got a good extension cord."
Insider tip: Stay at Gabriels on Gambier, a B&B run by Margaret Gabriel and her husband, Leagh. The grounds have a pond and meadow, and the house is stuffed with good reads (Margaret was once and antique book dealer).
Getting there: Hop a water taxi at Horseshoe Bay ( as short drive from Vancouver ) and reach Gambier in 15 minutes.
