Gambier Island Sea Ranch (GISR or simply the “Sea Ranch”) is located at the head of Port Graves (commonly known as Long Bay) on Gambier Island in Howe Sound. The Sea Ranch is approximately 16 kilometers by water from Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver. By the regularly scheduled water taxi, the trip takes approximately 30 minutes.
This bare land strata development was granted preliminary layout approval by the Islands Trust on May 23, 1978, and by the Department of Highways on December 7, 1978.
The Sea Ranch comprises 334 acres (135 hectares) of land cradled in a beautiful valley situated from the southwest at Long Bay to Brigade Bay on the northeast side of the Island. It has approximately 1.5 kilometers of ocean frontage surrounding the head of Long Bay. There is a stream that runs through the valley into the head of the bay. This stream is a spawning area for Chum salmon and is host to a salmon run each November. The valley is treed with cedar, hemlock and spruce. Mt. Artaban, south east of the Sea Ranch, rises to 814 meters.
Sixty-six individually owned half lots are situated around the head of the Bay along the oceanfront as well as in the meadows and along the base of Mount Artaban. All of the lots are serviced by fresh water and sewer systems managed by GISR. GISR is not connected to the provincial electrical power grid. Motorized vehicles are not allowed on the property.
All that remains of the original farm that was first run here in the early 1900s is the farmhouse and dozens of fruit trees. The Sea Ranch now operates as a hobby farm with chickens, seasonal sheep, pigs and turkeys. This storybook farm is cared for by permanent care takers. Kids love to race up to the farm to see how much the animals have grown since their last visit, feed food scraps to the pigs and see if there are any eggs to collect.
Wharves and docking facilities accommodate the water taxi and Owner’s boats. Warm waters great for swimming and other water activities.There are a number of barns, shelters and outbuildings that house strata livestock and maintenance equipment.
There are many pleasant walking and hiking trails to be explored. There also is a newly constructed community gathering shelter (the Pavilion) that was built in 2012. The natural beauty of the setting augments the unique characteristics of this island community, and its residents are committed to preserving it for generations to come.
There is a real separation from regular life; there is a slowness, a simplicity and a community feeling that is rare. Everyone knows one another, the children are able to run free, shirtless and shoe-less, in little packs with endless playmates. And residents are all able to focus on what’s important: family and being a good neighbour.
